PopCouncil Early Marriage Radio Announcements
Nigeria, particularly northern Nigeria, has some of the highest rates of early marriage in the world. Nationwide, it is estimated that approximately 37 per cent of girls aged 15 to 19 years old are forced into marriage (BBC 7 Sept. 2002). In Northern Nigeria, nearly half of all girls are married by the age of 15. Early marriage inevitably leads to early childbirth, one of the leading causes of maternal and infant death as well as fistulas.
The Population Council works to educate young women and men about the dangers of early marriage. One of their campaigns in 2007 was a radio campaign to raise awareness about early marriage. See below for the radio messages as well as a few of Population Council’s reports on this project.
