Edge of Joy Film Documents Maternal Health Issues at Kano Hospital
Dawn Shapiro’s Film, The Edge of Joy, takes a look inside the Murtala Mohammad Specialist Hospital in Kano, Nigeria.
From the website:
The Edge of Joy is a documentary film that follows an ensemble cast of Nigerian doctors, midwives and families to the frontlines of maternal care.
Inside a maternity ward, the film chronicles distressed labors, deaths, and miraculous survival. Outside, lack of blood supply transportation and family planning are examined as causes of the cycle that kills more than 36,000 Nigerian women each year.
The central characters in The Edge of Joy are the people deep within the Nigerian culture who know its misconceptions, its limitations, but also its capabilities. Narrated by award winning journalist, Eliza Griswold, and featuring animation by Yoni Goodman, this portrait of pregnancy and childbirth shows the consequences of poor maternal health as it explores the nuances and complexities of bringing emerging health technologies to the developing world.
“‘The Edge of Joy’ is a timely rallying cry against women accepting the perilous status quo.” Global Health Magazine

1st Year Evaluation of Kaduna EMR System
eHealth Nigeria just finished the 1 Year Evaluation of the Family Health Unit Demonstration Clinic (part of the Shehu Idris College of Health Sciences and Technology) in Tudun Wada, Kaduna Nigeria. The assessment visit on July 14, 2010 was set up to determine how the EMR system is currently being used, assess the EMR advantages and disadvantages, and determine how to improve the system.
The 3 main accomplishments of the EMR implementation are:
- By having access to accurate information, staff is taking the initiative to find more ways to use that data to increase awareness and improve work at the clinic such as making bar graphs and pie charts
- Staff are inspired by the effect the EMR system has on data collection and are asking to use the EMR in more departments
- Entering data into the EMR system is making data collection more accurate and allowing staff to discover problems with data collection, which can then be corrected.
The full report and survey results are available for feedback and comments.
Also check out Evelyn’s blog about the Assessment Visit.
Update:
Final Version of Evaluation Report now uploaded.
