Implementations

Minjibir General Hospital (Kano, Nigeira)
February 2010

During February, 2010, eHealth Nigeria did its second EMR implementation at Minjibir General Hospital in Kano, Nigeria. This time, the EMR was designed to cover every ward in the hospital, not just maternal health. The implementation was enhanced with training support from Pathfinder International, which works with the hospital on maternal and child health programs. In one week, the hospital had three computers running OpenMRS with multiple wards participating in the data input process. By integrating the EMR into the entire hospital, we were able to raise the technological and medical capacity of the entire staff, not just the record keepers. The availability of the information to key staff will allow clinicians to make decisions based on a patient’s history and improve the quality of care.

Shehu Idris College of Health Sciences and Technology (Kaduna, Nigeria)
June-September 2009

In 2009, eHealth Nigeria implemented an electronic medical records (EMR) system using OpenMRS for the Shehu Idris College of Health Science and Technology (SICHST) in Kaduna, Nigeria [8]. The project was designed specifically to determine the effect EMRs had on maternal and reproductive health. The three-month process resulted in electronic forms for all clinical areas, greatly reduced data duplication and created a monthly reporting process that takes only seconds. The EMR created accurate information regarding maternal care at the clinic and reveled the types of problems women face during childbirth. The system provides not only access to the first patient-based health indicators in Nigeria (as opposed to previously error-prone aggregate data) but is also an example of the potential to overcome the harsh computing environment in Nigeria to implement eHealth systems that will improve the quality of care for at-risk women and children.
