Working at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital

eHealth Nigeria InfoCard

The Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) is one top teaching hospitals in Northern Nigeria. It has approximately 400 beds, serves almost 20,000 patients each year and is run by 1,500 senior and student medical workers. However, limited staff and lack of patient information causes a large number of patient deaths, still births and complications. eHealth Nigeria believes that AKTH is the perfect institution to work with to do an electronic medical record implementation because of the willingness of staff and excitement for an EMR system and because of the capacity the hospital has for maintenance and management of the system.

eHealth Nigeria conducted an initial assessment of the hospital to determine how an EMR system could be used in each department. We are currently preparing for meetings and presentations with the AKTH administration to discuss the project. Read More on our blog.

RECENT STORIES

Info & EMR Needs of Private Clinics
In Nigeria, approximately 60% of health facilities are private clinics. eHealth Nigeria has begun visiting small private clinics to understand and address their Health Information needs. By customizing and installing electronic medical record systems we hope to improve patient care while easing the burden of data collection and retrieval. In order to insure sustainability, we are developing ongoing service plans to include maintenance, training, and software updates. eHealth Nigeria is currently the only company is Kano that is offering this type of full service to health facilities.

Community-based Maternal & Child Health Programs
eHealth Nigeria had the opportunity to meet with the Population Council staff in Abuja, Nigeria. Population Council is an international, nongovernmental organization that seeks to improve the well-being and reproductive health of current and future generations around the world through focused community-based research. We discussed the implementing a community-based surveillance program using mobile phones and electronic medical records to monitor maternal, newborn and child health. In addition eHealth Nigeria visited the Millennium Village in Pampaida with our friends at the Isa Wali Empowerment Initiative. We hope many collaborative health and empowerment projects will come out of the the sharing and learning that took place.

Our eHealth Toolkit
During the past 2 months, eHealth Nigeria has spent a lot of time working on improving our software and customizing it for Nigeria. The current programs that we are working on are the electronic medical records system (OpenMRS), a human resource management software (iHRIS ), mobile data collection tools (RapidSMS and Open Data Kit) and an Electronic Medical Library. This suite of essential eHealth Tools for the base of our eHealth ToolKit and a sustainable and reliable Health Management Information System.

We REALLY Need Your Help!
eHealth Nigeria has been working non-stop for a little over 2 months and we have accomplished so much. However, in order to move forward, we need to purchase 2 servers to host and manage all of our different software programs on. These servers will hold valuable patient information for hospitals and clinics all over Kano. We really need your support right now to help us purchase these servers because we cannot move forward without them. We are looking to raise a total of $4,000 and every donation is greatly appreciated. Please go to our website to donate today!

It's easy to Donate at our Website.
